Traveling Vancouver Island B.C. Canada and escaping the harsh winter on the mainland feels to me like diving into a different world of stunning landscape and unmanicured nature. Wild waterfalls, rainforest and ocean views make a stay on the island an unforgettable adventure.

A must visit point of interest for water and waterfall photography is Little Qualiqum Falls west of Parksville. From Nanaimo riding on HWY 19 north then take the exit to HWY 4 towards Port Alberny. About 19km down a sign on the right hand side of the highway will direct you the the falls. The upper falls are closer to the parking lot, the lower falls require a bit of a hike down. Proper hiking gear will make your tour enjoyable even in the winter. Less snow, certainly rain but also sunny days in the winter, mostly the locals only turn a photography day into an adventure. You can feel and hear the power of nature. Roaring water, sometimes an eagle fly by and full silence in the woods.

As the sun goes down and we are heading into the golden hour - the first and last hour of sunlight during the day - birds and waterfowl start getting ready for the night. Last hunting for food, and probably just like any other human being enjoying the last sun rays of the day before the night takes over. Golden colours reflect on the water, the pinkish winter colours pop up on the horizon. Time to relax, time to capture the warmest colours of the day.
